This webinar is a follow up to the presentation Accidental Map Librarian presented at ALA in Las Vegas in June. Digital or paper maps can pop up in anyone’s collection. Whether you inherited official map duties or are struggling with a few unexpected items, this webinar will answer your questions and also give you information on aerial photographs.

This webinar is sponsored by the Map and Geospatial Information Round Table (MAGIRT) of the American Library Association and the Western Association of Map Libraries (WAML). For more information about these organizations, see http://www.ala.org/magirt/ and http://www.waml.org/

      Bylaws & Governing Documents Committee

As of February 2014, there are no pending revisions for either the MAGIRT Bylaws or the MAGIRT Organizational Manual. Tracey Hughes, Chair of Bylaws & Governing Documents, will be reviewing the larger ALA documents to attempt to ensure that there are no conflicts between those governing documents and our own. As Chair, Tracey has been keeping a list of items for potential future discussion with regard to the governing documents i.e. a ‘parking lot’. At this time, there is one item on the list which wasdiscussed and determined not to be acted upon at this time. This item is:

      • Section V d viii. Standing Committees - Program Planning - this section was to be discussed at the in-person Program Planning meeting in Chicago; as written, it reflects current practice of the past several years of having the Vice Chair chair the committee during their first year in office, and then manage the program that is put on during their year as Chair. Discussion was to look at the structure of that committee and move it to a more regular committee with a 2 year chairperson who is not the MAGIRT Chair.

If you have any suggestions or recommendations for the governing documents, please forwardthem to Tracey at thughes@coloradomtn.edu. You can review our governing documents via the link on either the MAGIRT website at http://www.ala.org/magirt/policies-procedures or via the MAGIRT LibGuide at http://magirt.ala.libguides.com/resources.

Be sure to visit MAGIRT's Policies & Procedures page for the most current Bylaws and Organizational Manual, and also don't be shy about offering suggestions if you see room for improvement!

        Cataloging and Classification Committee

Members of the Committee have recently been active in reviewing the Resource Description and Access (RDA) Bibliographic Standard Record from the Program for Cooperative Cataloging so that the needs of the cartographic cataloging community are represented. There is also a task force reviewing relationship designators in RDA to make sure that cartographic materials relationships are covered.

There will also be a program put on by MAGIRT at Annual 2013 in Chicago about RDA and cartographic materials - join us!  Details here!

          Education Committee

The Education Committee has held two very successful webinars, and the third was on July 22, 2013.

See the Trainings & Presentations tab for the archived webinars and details on upcoming educational events!

            GeoTech Committee

The GeoTech Committee has a task force to map ALA's membership - this is a hefty job and should produce some great information and maps for use by ALA Headquarters and members alike.  Come check out demonstrations of this membership mapping at the Membership Pavilion in Chicago!

The Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) Subcommittee has completed a white paper, it’s available at Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI)

The Spatial Data Catalog Subcommittee completed its final report with recommendations and presented the report to the GeoTech Committee and are working on an article about it!

              Membership & Marketing Committee

Busy, busy, busy!  Some of our projects are:

              • Select and purchase promotional items for MAGIRT's 2014 Annual program and meetings
              • Gather photos from the MAGIRT membership for inclusion on our various online outlets
              • Increase MAGIRT's membership numbers

                Nominations and Awards Committee

The Nominations & Awards Committee was busy during Fall 2014. We are pleased to have selected the 2014 MAGIRT Honors Awardee, successfully recruited and submitted two candidates for elected offices, and filled two upcoming Committee Chair vacancies!

MAGIRT Honors Awardee: The winner will be announced at ALA Annual 2014 during the MAGIRT Reception (time/date TBD). Thank you to those of you who submitted nominations - we listened to you and very much appreciated your input!

Elected Officer Candidates: We are extremely pleased to be putting forth new candidates for two elected officer positions which expire in June 2014. Tami Morse will be on the ballot for Secretary, and Beth Cox (our current Treasurer) will be running for Vice Chair of MAGIRT.

WHEN YOU SEE THE BALLOT COME OUT,PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE VOTE!  THERE IS SHAMEFULLY LOW ELECTION PARTICIPATION AND THE CHAIR TRIO WAS STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO ENCOURAGE OUR ROUND TABLES TO PARTICIPATE IN ELECTIONS, SO HERE IS YOUR STRONG ENCOURAGEMENT!

In the likely event that Beth Cox is elected as Vice-Chair, MAGIRT will be in need of a one year, temporary Treasurer. If you have any interest in this position, and hopefully interest in running for that position during the 2015 ALA Election, please contact Tracey Hughes at your earliest convenience at thughes@coloradomtn.edu and she will be happy to talk with you more about this leadership opportunity.

Committee Chair Vacancies/Replacements: Two Committees have their Chair terms expiring at the end of ALA Annual 2014 – the Online Presence Oversight Committee and the Publications Committee. We are pleased to have two excellent existing Committee members agree to step forward into those roles – Jessica Clemons for Online Presence and Sandy Schiefer for Publications. Many thanks to Roger for his hard work on the Publications Committee as Chair for the last few years!

                  Online Presence Oversight Committee

The Committee meets every month via Skype and last met on January 20, 2014. At this meeting, discussion occurred regarding the upcoming change of leadership of the Committee, our outreach plans for ALA Midwinter 2014, and our next steps with regard to working with the Publications Committee/base line Editor on exploring ways we can better integrate base line content into the LibGuide.

Leadership: Jessica Clemons will be taking over as Chair of the Online Presence Oversight Committee at the conclusion of ALA Annual 2014, and we are all excited to have her move into this leadership role.

Outreach Plans for ALA Midwinter 2014: Jessica and Tracey will continue to be available during the Saturday 1-2:30 pm timeslot for assistance with the LibGuide.  At that time, Tracey and Jessica worked with Angie Lee, GIS Discussion Group Leader, to integrate and update content for that section of the LibGuide.

Publications Committee/base line Editor: Tracey will be contacting John Olson to see if he can attend the February 17, 2014 meeting of the Online Presence Committee to talk about potential ways to better integrate base line content into the LibGuide.

                    Program Planning Committee

The Program Planning Committee for 2014 is actively working towards producing a great program for those of our colleagues who find themselves to be Accidental Map Librarians!  `Learn the basics about the 'anatomy of a map,' collecting tips, configuring storage, organization, and preservaton tips.  We will also cover digital map resources you ought to be aware of, both free and licensed.

At the 2014 Midwinter conference we will discuss ideas for the 2015 Annual Conference in San Francisco.
